But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you

Matt 6:6

What is the secret place? The secret place, where we meet with God individually, has both a physical dimension and a spiritual dimension. Let us just focus on the physical characteristics right now.

First of all, the secret place is where you don’t “multi-task” your relationship with God. It is where you’re not meeting with God and doing something else at the same time. You’re not praying and driving at the same time; you’re not worshipping and showering at the same time; though I do strongly encourage these lifestyles of constant prayer and worship! We are exhorted to “Pray without ceasing” in 1 Thes 5:17, and we should practice the presence of God in everything that we do.

However, to truly enter into the secret place, we need to focus on God with undivided attention. To enter into the inner court, the chamber of the King, no multi-tasking is allowed. God is worthy of our total devotion, of our spirit, soul, and body. And the secret place is a place of rest, without any spiritual striving on our part. We enter in by faith, no matter where we are in the physical realm.

It is possible to enter into the secret place in a crowd of people, where no one is engaging you, but the best secret place, in the physical sense, is the place where you are totally alone with God, whether in a private room, or out in nature without a living soul in sight. Sometimes the best secret place is in the backseat of my car in a safe, quiet parking lot.

If there is no secret place at home or at work, we need to radically pursue a physical environment where we can enter in without distraction. We need to jealously cultivate and guard our intimacy with God. So, if you haven’t found a secret place yet, search for it with all your might, because when you discover it you will find Father God waiting for you there.
